The onboarding process

In order for Inchcape to buy your car and provide a quick payment, we need you to complete the 'onboarding' process. This will involve creating a temporary account with our payments platform provider - Stripe. Stripe provide identity verification & payment solutions to millions of companies around the world such as Amazon, Google & Zoom.

The 'onboarding' process is a quick and effective way to check your identity and collect your bank details from you. During the process, You’ll be asked to verify yourself by using a form of identity (passport or driving licence) and then taking a selfie – please choose ‘automated verification’ so there’s no delay. You’ll also need to input your bank details so we can initiate the payment of funds into your bank account.

The process will have the following steps

  1. Verification - Verify yourself by clicking on the link you received in an email from us and using the verification code we have sent in a separate email
  2. Contact Details - Enter your email and phone number (you will be sent a verification PIN code so please use your own number and enter it carefully)
  3. Personal details - Enter your personal details (name, date of birth & home address)
  4. Identity Check - Let's verify your identity. Stripe will verify your identity using images of you, your ID and other data sources.
Have a form of identification ready and be prepared to take a selfie.
Choose automated verification in order to not to have delay
  5. Bank Details - Add your bank account details so we can pay you.
  6. Review - Review your information and make sure all the data entered is correct, and finally complete the process by submitting the form

What happens after onboarding?

Now, that you have completed your onboarding steps, we’ll be in touch to arrange a physical appraisal of your car ( if not already arranged ). Once the appraisal is complete and the valuation confirmed, we’ll release the payment to your bank account via Stripe. Stripe is a global platform that enables us to pay you directly to your bank account without us ever needing to hold your details. Once the payment is on its way you will receive an email confirming your payment has been issued. Payment into your account is usually instant or within a few minutes as long as your bank supports the faster payments service (FPS).

However, if you experience any problems, please contact your buying dealership directly or the Mercedes-Benz Digital Team on mb.digitalsales@inchcape.co.uk

Before we purchase your vehicle from you, we need to ensure we know who we're buying from. Using the online identity check allows this to happen in a very quick and easy manner. In order to not cause a delay, choose the 'automatic verification' process rather than 'manual'

Before starting the verification process, here’s what you need:

  • A valid passport or driving licence. Not a photocopy or a picture of an ID document. Ensure that the ID document hasn’t expired.
  • A device with a camera, if possible, use a mobile device. Cameras on mobile devices typically take higher-quality photos than a webcam.
  • The quality of the images captured affects success rates dramatically. Below are a few best practices to help make sure that your verification succeeds:
  • Capture a clear image. Make sure that the images aren’t too dark or bright, and don’t have a glare. Hold steady and allow your camera to focus to avoid blurry photos.
  • Don’t block any part of your ID document in the image. Ideally you should lay it flat to take the photo.
  • Don’t block any part of your face. Remove sunglasses, masks, or other accessories.
  • Find a location with ambient lighting. Avoid spaces with strong overhead lights that cast a shadow on your face or ID document. Avoid sitting directly in front of a bright light which can wash out your face and add a glare to your ID document.

You'll need either a passport or driving licence. The system may also offer a government issued identity card, but as we don't use those in the UK don't choose that option as we can't accept that method of verification.

You'll also be asked to input your name, home address, date of birth and the bank account details where you want the payment to be made to.

We use Stripe, a global payments and identity platform to verify you and to make the payment into your bank account. Stripe collects your data, not Inchcape Retail Ltd. Authorised members of Inchcape will be able to access the detail of the documents for added verification, for instance to check the details against the V5 document you've provided. However, the details and documents used via Stripe's identity verification process are not stored or hosted on any Inchcape systems. For more details see Stripe's privacy policy!

The details collected during the verification process will be stored for 30 days. These will then be removed automatically. If however you'd like your details to be removed before the end of 30 days, please contact our customer services team who can arrange that for you. Email tellusmore@inchcape.co.uk with details of your request

If your vehicle sale is to a Mercedes-Benz dealership, please contact your sales representative at the Mercedes-Benz store

If your vehicle sale is via the Sell My Car team, please contact GUCbuyers@Inchcape.co.uk

If it hasn't already been arranged, our team will be in touch with you to arrange a physical appraisal of your car. Once the appraisal has been completed and the valuation confirmed, we'll release the payment straight into your account. Payment is usually immediate or within a few minutes as long as your bank supports faster payments. To check if your bank supports faster payments, enter your sort code on this sort code checker.
