Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is expanding

If your vehicle doesn't meet the ULEZ emission standards and isn't exempt, you need to pay a £12.50 daily charge to drive inside the zone.

Operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year (except Christmas Day) to help clean up London's air

What is the Ultra Low Emission Zone?

The Ultra Low Emission Zone, also known as ULEZ, is an area in London that has restrictions in place to help with lowering vehicle emissions in the UK's capital city. The zone currently covers all areas within the North and South Circular Roads, however, the North Circular (A406) and South Circular (A205) roads are not within the zone. You can check to see if an area is within the zone by using the Government's postcode finder.

If you're driving a vehicle that doesn't meet the ULEZ emissions standards, you will need to pay the £12.50 daily charge. This includes residents of the ULEZ zones.

The Ultra Low Emission Zone Explained

The Ultra Low Emission Zone includes the following vehicles:

  • Cars
  • Motorcycles
  • Vans
  • Specialist vehicles (up to and including 3.5 tonnes)
  • Minibuses (up to and including 5 tonnes)

The simplest way to pay a ULEZ daily charge is by signing up for Auto Pay.

Benefits of using Auto Pay include the following:

  • Never forget to pay charges again.
  • The system will automatically check whether you need to pay the ULEZ daily charge (and/or the Congestion Charge) and will automatically bill your registered payment method each month.
  • It is free to register and it means you will never forget to pay the charge or risk a fine for vehicles registered on your Auto Pay service.
  • Protection from receiving Penalty Charge Notices while registered.
  • Registration for up to five vehicles.
  • You can also download the official TfL Pay to Drive in London app, which is available as a free download from the Apple App Store and Google Play store.

Is my vehicle ULEZ compliant?

Vans (small and large), minibuses and some other specialist vehicles need to meet emission standards when travelling within the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

Vehicles included are:

  • Small vans (weighing up to and including 1.205 tonnes unladen weight)
  • Larger vans, 4X4 light utility vehicles, motorised horseboxes, pickups (over 1.205 tonnes unladen weight up to and including 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight)
  • Ambulances and motorcaravans (2.5 tonnes to 3.5 tonnes)
  • Minibuses (more than 8 passenger seats, not over 5 tonnes)

Minimum emission standards

  • Petrol: Euro 4 (NOx)
  • Diesel: Euro 6 (NOx and PM)

The ULEZ is enforced based on the declared emissions of the vehicle rather than the age, however:

  • All new diesel vans sold from September 2016 should meet the Euro 6 standard
  • All new petrol vans registered with the DVLA from January 2006 should meet the Euro 4 standard

Simply check your van below by entering your vehicle registration number.

Cars need to meet the ULEZ emissions standard when travelling within the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) or the daily £12.50 charge must be paid.

The standards for cars include the following:

  • Petrol: Euro 4 (NOx)
  • Diesel: Euro 6 (NOx and PM)

The ULEZ is enforced based on the declared emissions of the vehicle rather than the age.

  • Petrol cars that meet the ULEZ standards are generally those first registered with the DVLA since 2006, although cars that meet the standards have been available since 2001
  • Diesel cars that meet the standards are generally those first registered with the DVLA since September 2015

Simply check your car below by entering your vehicle registration number.

The ULEZ Expansion 2023

As of the 29th August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone in London will be expanding across all London boroughs.

This expansion is happening to help clear the city's air and improve health amongst residents in the capital.

If your vehicle doesn't meet the emissions standards and you need to drive within the ULEZ, including the expanded area from 29th August 2023, you could face a daily charge of £12.50.

Residents of the ULEZ will also need to pay the charge, however, you don't need to pay if you are parked inside the zone and don't drive.

Should I buy and Electric Vehicle?

Benefits of going all-electric include the following:

  • Electric cars and electric vans are more environmentally friendly
  • There are financial benefits to driving a hybrid or electric vehicle, including being exempt from ULEZ charges
  • Lower running costs
  • Higher performance
