Introducing the Toyota Aygo X

The Toyota Aygo X is the latest city car from Toyota replacing the Aygo. The Aygo X reinvents the city car as we know it by combining stylish crossover SUV looks, the latest in car technology and safety features whilst also offering low running costs and value for money.

Unmistakable with sharp lines, striking alloy wheels, contrasting colours and LED technology, the Aygo X catches the eye for all the right reasons. Inside the theme continues with a well laid out cabin, a large central touchscreen, contrast colour accents and stiching.

The Aygo X is available with one engine from launch, a 1.0l petrol engine returning 72bhp and up to 58.8mpg. You can choose from a 5-speed manual or an automatic.

Living with the Aygo X

The Toyota Aygo X features SUV inspired style which ensures it stands out for all the right reasons. The Aygo X has a higher ride height than other city cars, large alloy wheels with diamond cut finishes and two-tone paint finishes which give an element of fun and style.

There are sharp lines, LED lights and the familiar glass bootlid, whilst the optional privacy glass adds security and class.

The Aygo X comes in range of colour options such as our car's Chilli Red Bi-Tone, Juniper Blue, Cardamon Green and Ginger Beige which help give the Aygo X an even more confident look. There are also more common options such as white, black and silver.

No matter which trim you choose the Aygo X's SUV stance and style gives it a unique look.

The interior of the new Aygo X is a big upgrade from the old Aygo. It features bold colours and materials throughout which make the interior both feel special and built to last.

In the centre of the dashboard is a large central touchscreen starting at 7" on the entry-level models which can be upgraded to 9". All the touchscreen systems come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard which allows you to mirror your phone onto the screen for entertainment, navigation and communications. Below the touchscreen are the climate control buttons which are clear and simple to operate.

In front of the driver the multifunction steering wheel has all the controls you need to operate functions such as the media system, cruise control, voice control and telephone. Behind this the instrument cluster features easy to read dials and a central colour screen which can be customised to show the information you want to see such as speed, fuel economy and vehicle status.

Overall the interior feels modern and different whilst also offering comfort and usability.

Walking up to the Toyota Aygo X the first thing you notice are the striking looks especially with the bi-tone colour option specified like on our car.

Once inside it is easy to get comfortable with lots of movement in the seat and steering wheel to allow the driver to find their perfect seating position. To turn the car on you simply turn the key and the refined engine starts up.

Once on the move you'll notice that the Aygo X benefits from being based on the Yaris with comfortable ride quality and accurate steering. Despite the stylish, large alloy wheels the Aygo X handles speed bumpers and potholes well. At higher speeds the Aygo X is also more insulated than previous models which makes it feel more refined and less tiring to drive.

The Aygo X is easy to maneuver with a small turning circle of just 4.7 metres, whilst the light steering and commanding view of the road help further. Depending on the trim the Aygo X also has front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera which makes it even easier to avoid obstacles.

We drove the manual car but if we were to choose we'd option the CVT automatic as it gets the best out of the three cylinder engine and makes driving it much easier.

Aygo X safety

The Toyota Aygo X features an array of safety features normally only seen in more expensive cars. Toyota Safety Sense is standard on the Aygo X and it features a camera and radar system to help prevent accidents and make driving easier.

The Pre-Collision System scans the road ahead for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, if a possible collision is detected the driver is alerted. If the driver fails to respond then the brakes are automatically engaged to help prevent or reduce the impact of a collision.

Other features of Safety Sense include lane departure warning which alerts the driver should the car move from its lane without the indicator being turned on. As well as Automatic High Beam assist which helps illuminate as much as the road ahead without dazzling other road users. Finally, Road Sign Assist reads road signs such as speed limits and other messages and displays these on the dashboard. Should you then speed or not follow the sign's instructions the car will warn you.

Aygo X running costs

The Toyota Aygo X benefits from low running costs, due to its low CO2 emissions which puts the Aygo X in  lower benefit-in-kind company car tax bracket than many of its rivals. Plus, with careful driving up to 60mpg is achievable which means you spend less on fuel.

Thanks to the range of safety features and small engine, the Aygo X is also in the lower insurance categories which means it should not cost too much to insure even for new drivers.

The Aygo X comes with a three-year warranty as standard which can be extended up to 10 years if you service the car at a Toyota centre which gives peace of mind should anything go wrong that you're covered. You may also choose to benefit from Toyota's range of service plans which allow you to spread the cost of servicing across a set number of months.

Aygo X practicality

The Aygo X has grown in size over the previous model, with a larger wheelbase and higher ride height the Aygo X is easier to get in and out of. The extra size also benefits practicality as there is more space inside, plenty of storage cubbies and a good size glove box. In the rear there is space for two adults.

The boot is also larger, with 60l more space giving a total capacity of 231l. If you need to carry larger items the rear seats fold down in a 50/50 configuration and this provides over 800l of space.

Toyota Aygo X verdict

The Toyota Aygo X offers a huge upgrade over the previous generation with quirky SUV styling, low running costs and a range of technology and safety equipment previously unseen in the city car segment.

The Aygo X blends the technology and driving experience of its larger models with the usability of a more compact city car.

If we were to choose the Aygo X we'd specify the automatic gearbox as it makes the driving experience easier and more refined and choose one of the striking bi-tone colour schemes such as the test car's Chilli Red.
